CHAPTER 22: CALIFORNIA

“When I looked at the ocean, I knew I wanted to always be near it. The time had come to relocate to a place with so much beauty.”

After her freshman year in Boston, our older daughter, Ruthie, transferred to the University of California in Santa Cruz. In 1982, Edith and I visited her there. We’d never been to Northern California and were eager to explore the area, so the three of us took a weekend trip to the nearby Monterey Peninsula. While Edith was resting at the hotel, Ruthie and I took a drive around 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach.

The landscape and coastline were mesmerizing. When I looked at the ocean, I knew I wanted to always be near it. The time had come to relocate to a place with so much beauty.

Back at the hotel, I told Edith I had fallen in love with California and was ready to move. She immediately agreed. Just like when we met and decided to get married so quickly—and like every other major decision in our lives—we both just knew these things and never disagreed.

Three days later, we bought a house in Carmel.

After almost thirty years, I was ready to retire. For decades, Simon and I had worked day and night, as if our lives depended on it. Our business wasn’t easy. It was one headache after another. We’d always persevered, but I was getting fed up. I was tired of leaving for work at 6:00 a.m. every morning, and sick of having to worry about robberies—a constant concern because of the large amounts of gold and silver we had to keep on hand.

My interests had shifted from business to the spiritual realm. I wanted the freedom to go where I wanted to go and do what I wanted to do, and I had enough money to do that. So, when someone came along who wanted to buy our business, Simon and I both agreed to the sale. Just like that, a very significant era of my life came to a close.

I was not quite sixty and I was officially retired. My time was my own!
