Nyah took the car ride back in silence. She watched the world scroll by, faster than riding on any horse or fae-bred elk, and embraced the numbness within. The two enforcers accompanying her and Izell were quiet, and she could feel them glancing at her occasionally. They’d returned from escorting Adrius, and she couldn’t meet their eyes for fear of judgement that she’d sent him away like a coward rather than hear him out.

In truth, she didn’t know what to say to him until she was before his door and knocking, to no answer. “Adrius?” she called, trying their secret knock next.

Nothing.

“I’m sorry I overreacted. Again.” She spoke to the cold wood, resting her forehead against it. Maybe he was listening, and if so, she would at least express herself from the heart. “I’m ready to hear what you were going to say. That it was a political arrangement? I can see that now. She took my throne, and you must’ve abdicated for a while when I…when you thought I was dead…”

She took a deep hiccup of breath, feeling a tear finally leak down her cheek. “I never thought we’d see each other again, and you must’ve done the same,” she continued. “It’s just, I waited for you, and at the time, I thought you cracked within, what, twenty years? That’s nothing…”

As she drifted off, she realized there was someone else on this floor, attempting to ignore Nyah as she dusted the corners of the corridor. A maid. She’d completely overlooked the maid. Color flushed her cheeks as she imagined what exactly she must look like, desperately spilling her heart out to a closed door.

Well, if Adrius was there, maybe he’d take her words to heart. She flashed a nod to the other woman and headed up to her own room to rest so she could tackle the next day with the verve it would require.
