Chapter 4: String Theory
If you thought that quantum physics and chaos were controversial topics, then string theory might just take the cake with this one. String theory, one of the most untested and unproven areas in physics, may just bring about more questions than it ever will answer. But it is a beautifully compelling theory that all physicists learn about. Fortunately, you wonât have to be Sheldon Cooper, from The Big Bang Theory, to understand the basics of this theory.
This theory could potentially change the way that theoretical physics solves problems in the quantum realm. It can reduce multidimensional problems down to a singular dimensionâmaking it much more likely to be solved in the long run.
At the core of this brilliant theory lies a thought that has been influencing physics for centuries: At some basic level or foundation, all beings, forces, interactions, and manifestations of reality are attached together and tied into one another in the same fundamental framework.
In physics, there are four fundamental forces that can influence a body in motion or at rest. These four forces are: Strong forces, weak forces, electromagnetic forces, and gravitational forces. In most areas of physics, these forces are normally separated from one another, with only one or two overlaps. But, string theory is the theory that unifies and encompasses all of them at once.
Many physicists believe that string theory might be the strongest contender for adequately describing the quantum theory of gravitation (the quantum theory that amalgamates at the highest forms of energy levels). It is true that string theory remains untested, but it does have a strong theoretical backing which sounds very plausible.
Ed Witten is one of the forerunners in string theory and has made very compelling arguments for his cause. In his most recent article What Every Physicist Should Know About String Theory, he described how many similarities can be noticed in all of the laws of nature. There seems to be all of these unrelated phenomena, but they all correspond and overlap somehow.
He noticed that two large planetary or orbiting bodies work with gravity and with one another according to Newtonian laws, exactly the same way that electrically-charged atoms either attract or repel one another. Also, the way pendulums can oscillate and swing, works with exactly the same principle as how a planetary body can orbit a larger star or a black hole.
Waves share several similarities, regardless of what type of waves they are. Water waves, light waves and gravitational waves all work in similar fashions, even though they are produced from entirely different sources. Because of these similarities, Witten realized that if a person wants to dive into the quantum theory of gravity, they will first need to grasp the quantum theory of a single particle. The reason for this is simple: Because itâs the same fundamental theory and will work in the same way.
