The Science of the Chakras

If you examine figure 16, you will notice that each of the chakras is situated near one or more important organs of our body. This has been noted for millennia, and this is the clue suggesting a scientific understanding of chakras.

Remember Rupert Sheldrake's work on morphogenetic fields? Sheldrake correctly theorized the function of the vital body: It provides the blueprint for physical form-making. Physical organs are the representations of vital body functions such as maintenance of the body or reproduction. Chakras are those places in the physical body where consciousness simultaneously collapses the vital and the physical in the process of which the representation of the former is made in the latter.

Here is a chakra-by-chakra description of the vital function, the corresponding physical organs, and the associated emotional feelings:

Root chakra: The vital body function is elimination, a crucial component of maintenance called catabolism. The organs that express the function are the kidneys, bladder, and large intestine (rectum and anus). The feelings are selfish rootedness and survival-oriented competitiveness when energy moves in, and fear when the energy moves out.

Sex chakra: The vital body function is reproduction. The reproductive organs—uterus, ovaries, prostate, and testes—are the physical representation of the reproductive function. The feelings are sexuality and amour when energy is inward and increasing; when energy is outgoing and depleting, the feeling is of unfulfilled lust.

Navel chakra: The vital body function is maintenance (anabolism), and the organ representations are the stomach and small intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. With an upsurge of energy at this chakra, the feelings are pride and anger; when energy moves out, the feelings are unworthiness and resentment.

Heart chakra: The vital body function is self-distinction (the distinction between me and not-me). The organ representations are the heart and thymus gland of the immune system whose job is to distinguish “me” from “not me.” Here we feel romance when energy moves in. When energy moves out, we feel loss, grief, hurt, and jealousy.

Why is romance felt at the heart chakra when we meet the appropriate partner? Because now the “me” is extended to include the partner. But romantic love is still me-oriented; he/she is important because he/she is mine. This is to be expected. These feelings are the conditioned movement of vital energy, conditioned through millions of years of evolution. When the self-distinction extends to everyone, when everyone is my “family,” the heart chakra is said to “open” for everyone and we feel the universal, unconditional love that mystics talk about as agape or compassion.

Throat chakra: The vital function is self-expression. The organ representations are the lungs, throat and speech organs, hearing organs, and thyroid gland. The associated feelings are the exultation of freedom (of speech) when energy moves in and frustration when the opposite happens. (You recognize why freedom of speech is considered so important in our culture, although real freedom is freedom of choice.)

Brow chakra (also called the third eye): The vital function is evolution. The evolutionary impulse from the supramental for the development of the neocortex, the physical representation of the mind, was “heard” here via intuition.
