The father and mother looked at one another and smiled. Little Dove was always drawing bright and colorful pictures, which they put on the walls all over the house.

“Turn around!” she called out to them. “And don’t peek until I say you can. Okay, now!” As the man and his wife turned to look at Little Dove’s picture, they were stunned by what they saw. In her child-like hand, Little Dove had drawn a large, panoramic scene of beautiful birds in a riot of color, some perched on branches, some soaring on the wind. A stricken look came over the mother’s face. Despite herself, she let out a great, choking sob. Little Dove was mystified by her mother’s reaction. “What’s the matter, mama?” she asked. “Don’t you like my drawing? I thought you loved birds. That’s why you named me after one.” Her mother quickly collected herself. “Of course I love your picture,” she assured Little Dove. “It’s a beautiful drawing,” her father agreed. “But your mother is tired, with all the excitement of getting ready for your birthday. And it’s past your bedtime, Little Dove.”
