âAlbatross?â she offered. âI get them mixed up.â
âDid you just insult me?â The man drew himself tall. Who knew green eyes could appear so cold?
âShe did,â was Julioâs snicker.
Posie hastened to correct the misassumption. âNo, I was not insulting him.â Not entirely true, but never admit to being rude to a customer out loud. âWhat are you supposed to be then? Perhaps a dove? Your wings are too big for an ostrich.â
âI am not a bird.â The very word appeared to taste sour to him.
She, on the other hand, managed the sweetest smile. âLet me try again. Iâm guessing it should be obvious.â She tapped her chin. âMale harpy?â
Someone sucked in a sharp breath, and it occurred to her that she wasnât being very nice. But there was something about this man that rubbed her wrong. He wasnât just rude; condescension oozed from him.
Unacceptable. Being Canadian didnât give him the right to treat her like the gum on the bottom of his shoe sticking to the pavement every time he took a step. If he couldnât treat her with respect, then sheâd show him how that felt.
By the scowl on his face, he didnât enjoy it.
Julio turned away, and his body shook as if he were having a fit, whereas Helga appeared so stoic she might have been a statue.
A sneer pulled Mr. Seagullâs lips. âI guess I should make allowances given youâre only an ignorant human.â
âYou might want to read up on the definition of ignorant,â she muttered.
âYou should be kneeling in respect before me. I am an angel, descended from Heaven.â He spread his hands and raised his gaze, attempting to look beatific.
It made her giggle because it was so ridiculous. âSure, you are.â
âYou doubt my word?â His fine brows arched.
âNow sheâs done it,â muttered Helga.
âOh, shit. Fuck. I wish I was taping this,â Julio sputtered.
âYou have the wings, but whereâs the robe? And everyone knows angels have halos.â She circled a finger over her head.
âNot all choose to wear them.â
âOr you havenât earned one.â The next obvious choice.
It caused him to suck in and widen his shoulders. The wings ruffled rather realistically. âAs Heavenâs emissary, I am one of the most highly ranked.â
âIf you say so. I still have my doubts as to the angel thing seeing as how I was always taught they were nice.â The implication was understood, and the man recoiled, while Julio outright chuckled.
âSomeone really should do something about that tongue of yours. And then explain to me how it is a human can even see my wings. She shouldnât be able to see me at all.â Mr. No-Angel glared at Julio.
Julio finally composed himself. âIâm afraid Ms. Ringwald is not into the cosplaying like you and I.â Julio winked at her. âShe sees right through our shams.â
âSees through it?â Repeated in a musing manner. No-Angel eyed her. âYou think I am a human acting a part.â
âAnd really doing a good job staying in persona.â She gave him a thumbs-up.
Julio choked while Helga coughed and looked away.
