CHAPTER 25
Uncle Alec took Odelia aside for a moment. âListen,â he said. âI just talked to Charlene, and she told me we can go and meet the president as Marge and Texâs plus-ones. Iâm guessing youâre the other plus-ones? You and Chase?â
Odelia stared at her uncle. This was the first she was hearing of this. âMeet the president?â
He seemed taken aback. âYou didnât know?â
âNo, Mom hasnât told me. You mean theyâre actually going to meet the president?â
He seemed embarrassed that he was the one to break the news to her. âYeah, the president has a cabin in the mountains, and every year invites a few people over for a special birthday dinner. Thereâs a raffle you can enter and when your name is pulled from the hat you get an invitation. And apparently this year Marge and Tex got lucky.â He eyed her strangely. âSo if you and Chase arenât going, then who is?â
âNo idea,â said Odelia honestly. She wondered why her mom hadnât told her, and vowed to ask her the moment they arrived home. âBut good for you, Uncle Alec. I hope you have a great time. When is it?â
âNext week,â he said. âOnly Charlene wants me to buy a tux, and Iâm not sure I want to take on that expense. You wouldnât happen to know a place where I could rent a tux on the cheap, would you? I mean, itâs not as if Iâm going to wear it again.â
âCanât you wear the tux you wore for the wedding?â
âCharlene says itâs not nice enough for the president. Sheâs going to buy a new dress, and I guess she doesnât want me to look like a bum next to her.â
She patted his chest. âChase knows a great place. Itâs where he rented his tux for our wedding. Iâll ask him, shall I?â
âPlease do. Oh, and donât tell Charlene, ok?â
âMy lips are sealed,â she promised with a smile.
They joined the others, and since there wasnât a whole lot they could do, they decided to return to the police station, where Chase had a man in custody who might be able to tell them more about what was going on in this most baffling case.
And so it wasnât long before she was sitting on one side of a one-way mirror and Chase on the other, facing the suspect heâd asked his officers to apprehend in the park. Her four cats were seated on the table that offered the perfect view of interview room number one, and her uncle stood next to her, his arms folded across his chest, looking hopeful that they might be able to squeeze something interesting and revealing out of this man.
Dickson, or Lucas Boyle as his real name turned out to be, hadnât resisted arrest, though he had expressed surprise. He was a beefy man with a beet-red face who must have been sleeping rough for a while, if the state of his personal hygiene and physical appearance were anything to go by. His clothes
