Tex had sidled up to his neighbor, and now whispered, “I know what you did, Ted.”

“And what did I do, Tex?” asked Ted.

“You installed cameras on my back fence so you can spy on me.”

“Now why would I go and do that?” said Ted, and he looked genuinely surprised by this accusation.

“To make sure I’m not home when you’re destroying my gnomes!”

“That wasn’t me! I told you this morning. That wasn’t me, Tex!”

“Liar.”

“Now, Tex. That’s not very neighborly of you, is it?”

“It’s not very neighborly to destroy my gnomes.”

“I’m telling you: it wasn’t me!”

“I know a big, fat liar when I see one, Ted, and you’re it.”

“Look, I know you don’t like me very much, Tex, because my gnome collection is bigger and nicer than yours—”

“You said my collection was nicer!”

“I lied, all right! But that’s still no reason to treat me with this hostility. I did not destroy your gnomes. And I did not install any cameras on your back fence!”

Tex stared at the man, but Ted stared right back, and didn’t relent. Either the man was an expert liar, or he was telling the truth.

“But… if you didn’t put those cameras there, then who did?”

“The real saboteur, no doubt,” Ted said, and that actually made sense. “Someone is out to destroy your collection, Tex, and it’s not me.” He placed a hand on his shoulder. “As your neighbor, and your friend, I respect you too much to do a thing like that, you know that.”

“Mh,” said Tex without much excitement. “I guess.”

“Spoken like a true gnome collector,” said Ted with a big grin. “Now all we have to do is find out who really put those cameras there.”

“Oh, but we know who put those cameras there,” said Chase, who had approached the dueling duo. “It was Vale and Carew. Two career criminals. We have a witness who saw them do it this morning.”

Tex’s eyes went wide. “But then why did nobody tell me!”

“This morning?” said Ted. “But Tex’s gnomes were vandalized last night.”

“Norbert was attacked last night, but Jackson Brown was attacked three days ago,” said Tex. “So if Vale and Carew put those cameras up this morning, it couldn’t have been them.” He turned back to Ted and eyed him with suspicion.

But Ted held up his arms. “I didn’t do it—I swear!”

“All right, Ted,” said Chase, clapping the other man on the back. “We believe you. Don’t we, Dad?” And he gave his father-in-law an intent look. “Don’t we?”

“Mh,” Tex repeated. He still wasn’t too sure he believed that Ted was telling the truth. The man was an accountant, and accountants are known to fiddle. Fiddle with their tax returns, fiddle with expense reports, bills—and gnomes!

“Okay, so once this whole missing baby business is dealt with, I’ll take a closer look at this vandalism thing,” Chase suggested. “How does that sound, Dad?”

“Good,” Tex said without much conviction. Chase was a busy man, and once this baby was found, there would be some other emergency, and then another,
