CHAPTER 20

Tex had seen his last patient of the day and breathed a sigh of relief. Even after all these years, he still enjoyed his chosen profession, but sometimes he wished that his patients would use common sense in determining their symptoms instead of rushing to pay him a visit at the least little sign of trouble. Take Ida Baumgartner, for instance, who seemed to have cornered the market on imaginary diseases. Today she had insisted that she was suffering from a rare type of kidney cancer that manifested as a horseshoe-shaped rash on the forehead. It was true that she had a small rash on her brow, and with some imagination—or actually a lot—one could perhaps interpret its shape as vaguely resembling a tiny horseshoe. But to go from that to deciding she only had three more months to live was far-fetched, to say the least. But when he had tried to tell her she had no cause for concern, she had accused him of being a lousy doctor and threatened to take him to court.

He checked his watch and decided that the time had come to go home and see what the rest of the family was up to. And as he got up and started cleaning up a little in anticipation of the cleaning lady coming in later tonight, his phone chimed, and he saw that his wife was trying to reach him.

“Hey, honey,” he said. “What’s up?”

“Oh, Tex,” she said in a teary voice. Immediately he was on high alert.

“What’s wrong?”

“Someone has filed a complaint against me with the library authority, and now they’ve decided to temporarily replace me with a different librarian!”

“What?! What complaint?”

“I don’t know. Something about a book I recommended that wasn’t age-appropriate. I’m sure I did no such thing, but the person I spoke to said they’re taking this very seriously, and for the time being, I can’t come to work. Oh, Tex, what am I going to do? If they fire me…”

“They won’t fire you,” he said immediately. “You’re the best librarian this town has ever had. You’re devoted to your job and to your library visitors. I’m sure this is all some kind of terrible misunderstanding that will be cleared up in no time.”

“I don’t know,” she said, sniffling a little. “They said I gave a steamy romance book to a young girl and told her to read it from cover to cover. The parents caught it just in time and said it was the most horrible book possible. Pure filth, they called it, and they’re threatening to sue the library—and me personally! But I don’t remember ever recommending any such book to any young person.”

“Like I said, it’s probably some misunderstanding,” he said. “And the investigation will clear you, and then you can go back to work.”

“I hope so,” she said. “This library is my life, Tex. Without it, I’m nothing.”

“You’re not nothing,” he stressed. “You’re a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to a lot of people.
