Chapter 30

It was a long flight back, but I welcomed the cooling mist on my skin. We arrived back in the equus canyon, then dismounted and gathered feed nets for them. I was glad to see that Rovan and the Ignisfae that tended the equus had stuck with my suggestion to feed them with the hay gathered off the ground. After giving Zephyrine some attention, I peeled myself away from her, then started the walk back to the city with Rannoch.

“Strange how fast I attached to her,” I commented. “I’m having a hard time separating.”

“That is normal, the bond is a close one. When it happens, a thread of their spirit imprints on you, and one from you imprints on them. Intertwined.”

I nodded as I walked with him, then looked over my shoulder at her one last time before entering the tunnel pathway. She looked right back at me, her amber eyes connected with mine even from a distance. My chest expanded as I flooded with emotion, and longing to run back to her.

Rannoch stopped. “Do you want to stay longer with her? I understand, if so.”

“Actually, I’m pretty hungry. I do want to stay, but let’s go eat. I’d say we worked up quite an appetite.”

He chuckled. “No argument there.”
