conjecture: inference formed without proof or sufficient evidence

Once presented with additional evidence, Elyse realized her first impression was pure conjecture.

I DON’T THINK I EVER REALIZED just how much of my life-space was occupied by Billy Fitz until that Monday morning when, without any change to my routine, he was everywhere. Had he always had a locker just twelve down from mine? I don’t ever remember seeing him getting a Pepsi from the machine in the alcove under the B-wing stairway, but while I was on my way to English, there he was, with only forty or so people between us.

“So, did you finish your essay?” Gage said, sliding into his seat, causing a mild panic to all within earshot.

“Sorry about that,” I said, after reassuring the eavesdroppers that it was a joke. “I just didn’t feel like going to church. I caught myself up on the reading, though.” I flipped open our enormous anthology. “Jonathan Edwards. What a bunch of giggles.”

“Indeed.” Gage opened his book too. “You know, Edwards was a minister. He wouldn’t approve of you using a little white lie to stay home from church.”

“He was a Transcendentalist,” I countered. “As long as God forgives me, so would he. And I think God has much bigger things to worry about.”

Billy and I passed each other in the hallway between every class, and when it came time for lunch, I had to sit on the opposite of my usual seat to keep him out of my field of vision.

“What’s this?” Lottie said as she and Collin came up to the table. “You know Collin doesn’t like to face the jock table while he eats. Inadequacy kills the appetite.”

“Just for a few days.” I inclined my head toward Jayne, who hadn’t even unwrapped her peanut butter and honey sandwich.

“Oh, yes.” Lottie set her tray down and silently instructed Collin to do the same. “I’m sorry, Jayne, but you can hardly be surprised. Everybody knows Charlie goes to Dallas from Thanksgiving to the New Year. Certainly you didn’t think that was going to change just because the two of you were dating?”

“Lottie!” I intervened, knowing Jayne would never do so for herself.

“There’s no insult here, just the nature of the beast. Social strata are inescapable, so if you want security in a relationship, you need to find a boy who is less likely to improve upon you as his choice.” She sent Collin away to exchange her white milk for a chocolate before continuing. “Collin’s family has more money than mine, so outside of school, we might never work as a couple. But he’s in band and I’m in Pep Squad, so we meet the social equality standard within the school environment, see? You, on the other hand, come from an intact, middle-class family. Charlie has divorced parents, each with successful careers, and his father lives in a city that has a TV series named after it. So, no compatibility there. Then, while you are both equal in your academic mediocrity, he is on the Varsity Football Team.
