The final drive that clouds our judgment and creates a perception far removed from reality is our natural sense of self-defense. Here, self-defense is about how we are able to maintain a healthy sense of self-esteem by strategically plugging our ears, digging our heels in, and tuning others out. Our need to preserve self-esteem can drive us to ridiculous heights.
We donât want to feel bad about ourselves, and we will spin reality to keep it that way. Itâs the art of intentional ignorance and denialâbecause sometimes, thatâs just what we need to function and get by. If we feel too low about ourselves on a constant basis, weâll begin to knock on the door of depression and all that entails. Much like the D portion of the ABCD model of human drives, this makes us desperate to feel good about ourselves.
