It is around 1912. Marcel Narrator is visiting Gilberte, now the Marquise de Saint-Loup. Things are glum. Husband Robert, instead of being content with his “inversion,” works at making his wife “ill with jealousy by keeping with mistresses without pleasure to himself.” (VI: 20–21). From Gilberte, Marcel learns that he misread a signal from her many years ago which “would perhaps have changed the whole course of my life.” (VI: 6). He learns that the “ways” of Swann and Guermantes “were not as irreconcilable as I had supposed.” (VI: 40) Concluding that he has “no gift for literature,” he renounces writing and, in deteriorating health, retreats to a sanatorium.
