She did not go to the clinic immediately.

She remained in her apartment, phone in her hand, the address still open on the screen.

Her body felt unregulated. Every sound pressed too close. Every thought arrived carrying weight she had forgotten existed.

This was the contrast.

Before, the world had been quiet.

Now it was loud with meaning.

She tried to distract herself. Opened her laptop. Closed it again.

Every email felt personal. Every delay a failure. She imagined the people behind the messages—anxious, uncertain, waiting.

Her chest tightened painfully.

Her phone vibrated.

The phrasing was neutral. Final.

Emotional flooding confirms regression.

Her throat tightened.

She sat down on the floor, back against the wall, breathing shallowly.

She read the next line twice.

Risk to self and others increases exponentially.

Her pulse spiked.

She went outside.

The air felt sharp. Too cold, too present.

At the entrance to the building, an elderly woman struggled with several grocery bags. One tore slightly at the bottom, the weight pulling it apart.

Before she could think, she stepped forward.

“Let me help you,” she said.

The words came easily. Automatically.

The woman smiled with relief and handed her two of the bags.

“They’ve gotten heavier lately,” she said, apologetic.

They walked slowly up the stairs. Each step careful. Deliberate.

The woman talked about nothing important—the weather, the price of fruit, how the elevator had been unreliable lately.

She listened.

She adjusted her pace without being asked.

When they reached the woman’s door, the woman touched her arm lightly.

“Thank you,” she said. “That meant a lot.”

The contact sent a sharp, unexpected ache through her chest.

Her phone vibrated again.

She stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

The word settled heavily.

Back in her apartment, she locked the door.

Her nausea surged. Headache. A wave of exhaustion that felt almost like grief.

She lay on the floor, phone resting on her chest, staring at the ceiling.

She thought of the woman’s hand on her arm.
