He reached the house by sunset of the second night and landed heavily in the front yard. He shifted and stumbled forward. He was tired, sore, and more than a little ready to just crash in front of the fire with his clan all around him. He could smell the others inside, but he also smelled blood, and that sent him rushing through the front door.

“Donovan! Rake!” Oren didn’t have a chance to call out for Tobit, Avery, or Kovu before they were all on him. He hugged Donovan and Rake close as they touched him and kissed his shoulders and cheeks as they welcomed him back home. Oren reached out for Tobit and Avery as well, and they came too. Tobit kissed him gently, and Oren roughly kissed him back, hard enough that he was sure he had bruised Tobit’s soft lips.

Then he turned his attention to Avery and Kovu, who were nearby and had their hands on him as well, but had kept themselves apart from the rest of them.

“We were worried about you,” Avery said.

Kovu nodded, and gave him a little smile. He looked completely unsure of himself in their home, but it was where he belonged. They would keep him safe there. “Thank you for saving me from them.”

Oren pulled them both against him as well and he closed his eyes and savored the feeling of having them all around him and being safe, for the time being at least. He was sure the ice dragons would come back soon in order to retaliate against them, and especially him for destroying one of their houses. But when they came back his clan would be waiting for them, and now they had one more member to make them even stronger.
