Chapter 14

Kyra

As my mind slowly awakens, the first thing I’m aware of is the dull pain across my entire body. It’s as if my form is one large bruise—every muscle aching and sore. Opening my eyes, I see Davin tied up, lying beside me on the ground.

I try to move but my hands and feet are bound as well. Turning onto my back, I scan our surroundings.

It’s dark, only a tiny sliver of light filtering in from the barred window high above our heads. Dark gray brick walls surround us and the floor is cold and damp. I don’t know where we are, but it looks like a prison—three solid walls and one open one facing a hallway. I grasp a small stone on the floor and throw it toward the opening to test it.

It hits an invisible barrier, bouncing back toward me. Light arcs across the opening like fingering veins of lightning. It’s an energy field. A magical one if we’re where I think we are. As my memories slowly return, I think back on the Light Mage’s Guild in this province. We must be in the bowels of the building.

The open doors were a trap—a well-laid one that we were too slow to recognize and escape.

Sighing heavily, I curse myself. How could I not have recognized it sooner?

I roll onto my side and move closer to Davin. “Davin?”

His eyes snap open, full of anger. He tries to move, and then growls in frustration when he realizes his hands and legs are bound. He writhes against his bindings.

“Don’t worry, Kyra. We’re going to get out of here, my queen. My vow.”

“How?”

He gives me a handsome grin full of mischief a moment before someone’s voice calls out.

“You are awake.”

I turn toward the sound and watch as a Mage in light gray robes steps through the invisible barrier. With long red hair, streaked through with white, and pale blue eyes, she studies us with a piercing gaze. The energy field shimmers around her a moment as she passes through.

She places a small tray of food on the ground and then kneels before me, flashing a thin-lipped smile.

“I had hoped you would come here. It was a gamble, you know? Once you took out our Guardian of Destruction in the jungle, we anticipated you might seek out the Guild, but we couldn’t be sure. I am glad to see I was right.”

“Who are you?” I grind out.

“I am High Mage Hyleah.”

“What do you want?”

She stands and gives me an imperious look. “What all of us want who follow the one true God. He who brings about Destruction. We want you to join us.”

“Never,” I seethe.

Her eyes dart to Davin. “Perhaps you can be persuaded to change your mind. You care for this one, do you not?” Her nostrils flare. “You reek of his scent.”

I start to wonder how she knows this, but when dark fangs extend on either side of her mouth and her eyes turn obsidian black, I realize she is like Davin.
