Chapter 10

“When you awaken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush.”

Mason tuned out Faye Bowers, one of the pack elders who was speaking over his father’s grave. She meant well; he knew that. The words were beautiful, as always, and spoken with genuine compassion. Faye was the best person to speak for this. She had such a kind, compassionate heart, and she’d helped his father over the last few years while he’d been away working.

Mason had known the woman his entire life. As Kory’s grandmother, Mason had been around her a lot. Her home had been one frequently visited by the group of boys throughout their childhood.

Kory, Ben, Mason, Jasper, and Rowen. The five of them had been close. It was common in a pack like theirs. All being similar in age, it was natural for kids to group together, however their group had stayed close-knit. Other than Mason, that is. He was the only one who’d branched off away from the pack.

It had been difficult to leave a pack like this. Rowen’s parents, Tom and Norah, had really built this pack into something spectacular. Their lineage had led this pack for as long back as any of the stories went. As far as Mason knew, they were one of the oldest packs around. But they built this pack to stand and to stay, had changed it from a nomadic existence to one of substance and sustenance. There were times he wished he hadn’t left to study medicinals. Not as much anymore, now that he was working on his current project, but…

The space had gone eerily quiet in the moonlight. As was tradition, the pack had run under the light of the moon to a clearing, offering their grieving howls before shifting back to human form and paying their respects. Now they all stood, looking at him expectantly. Mason looked around, shaking off his internal monologue to see everyone’s eyes were on him.

Oh. Right. He needed to say a few words. He stepped up next to Faye and thanked her sincerely. She was an incredibly kind woman, and her words were more than he could have come up with on his own.

What did one say about a man who had wasted away in a half-life after his wife had passed? It made Mason feel callous, but if he were being honest, after his mother’s death, he grieved for two parents, not one.

His father had been slowly dying since the day his mother died, years ago. The bond they had shared was strong, and his father simply didn’t want to go on without her. He simply survived; treading water. Momma Faye had been kind in her words. He kissed the woman’s cheek, whispering his gratitude to her before addressing the crowd.

“There’s not much one can say in these moments. I’m grateful for everything this pack has done over the years to support my father in his grief. And ultimately, I’m thankful they can be together once more. I know today that Dad is truly happier than he has been in years, and that brings me comfort.
