The few days after the surgery, Kopetski called me at home to tell me to come to her office on Saturday so she could go over the results of the evaluation that she and her partner Dr. Claire Purcell had written up. Dr. Claire Purcell had met with Ami and me for a half hour, during which time Ami colored, and Dr. Purcell asked one question after another about my marriage. I didn’t think it was appropriate for Ami to hear most of my answers to her questions, so I wound up having to spell out most of our conversation as we talked.

I politely asked Ms. Kopetski if she could schedule this during the week because I could not be there on the weekend. I was working then, and I couldn’t afford to take the time off. However, I had every day during the week free. But she insisted I be there; they had no other time available. So I went and wound up losing $700 in pay. Because once again, they had all the cards, and I didn’t want them to claim that I wasn’t cooperating.

I then called my friend Duke, one of the captains at Continental. He had followed my case for over a year, ever since he had first come with me to Kempe and we met Dr. Richard Krugman there. Duke said he would be happy to come with me and be of some support.

When that Saturday came—March 22, 1992—a blizzard had hit Denver, and the roads were icy. As Duke and I approached Kopetski’s office, I was very anxious. I knew that Derek had already wrapped these two ignorant women around his finger.

Duke looked a lot like John Wayne, a very large and somewhat confident-looking man. When Kopetski and Dr. Purcell saw him, they quickly and loudly objected. “Oh, no!” they said. “He cannot come to this meeting.” They were quite surprised that I had brought someone with me.

I said, “Why not?”

Her response was, “He just can’t!”

Duke then said, “I know all about this case.”

Kopetski then said that there were things about Ami and Derek that would be said that he could not hear.

“Who are you?”

“I am Duke,” he said. “I am closely related to this case,” he said.

They refused to let Duke in with me. However, on another occasion they had a private session with Derek and his supposed past fiancée, Pam, the woman who would do anything to cover for him. Pam and Derek weren’t even seeing each other at this time and had not for a year. Now he was bringing her to Leona to make him look stable.

I then told Leona that I was going to call my attorneys, but I couldn’t get a hold of either one. So I decided I would go in and listen to what they had to say. But the first time they said something I didn’t want to hear, I would walk out. I thought to myself, “Here we go again, more punishment from these heartless, inept, incompetent, overpowered, degenerate women.
