PROPHET SULEMAN (A.S)
The Greatest King Ever Ruled
BISMILLAH
PROPHET SULAIMAN (SOLOMON)alaihi salam inherited Prophet Dawud's (David)alaihi salam prophethood and dominion. This was not a material inheritance, as Prophets do not leave their property. It is given away to the poor and needy, not to their relatives.
Prophet Muhammadsallallaho alaihi wasallam said,
"The Prophets' property will not be inherited, and whatever we leave is to be used for charity." (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
Prophet Sulaimanalaihi salam was very intelligent since his childhood. One day, two people came with their case in front of Prophet Dawudalaihi salam in the presence of Sulaimanalaihi salam. One of them was a farmer, and the other was a poor shepherd. The farmer complained that the sheep of the poor shepherd grazed over his farm and caused significant damage. He requested compensation from the shepherd. Dawudalaihi salam ordered the shepherd to give all of his sheep to the farmer as the compensation.
Sulaimanalaihi salam, with due respect towards his fatherâs judgment, took permission and humbly suggested another option. He suggested that the poor shepherd should take the farm and cultivate it and the farmer should keep the sheep and use their milk and wool. When the farm is restored to its original condition, the farmer should take back the farm and the sheep must be returned to the shepherd again. Dawudalaihi salam was amazed by the solution and appreciated it and didnât hesitate to accept a suggestion from the child.
Prophet Dawudalaihi salam was a wise king, and when he passed away, Prophet Sulaimanalaihi salam became king. He pleaded Allahsubhanahu wa ta'ala for a kingdom so big and powerful, such as none after him would have, and Allah granted his wish. Besides wisdom, Allah had blessed Sulaimanalaihi salam with many miracles. He could control the winds, and he could easily travel interminable distances within a brief period with the help of wind, and understand and talk to birds and animals. The Jinns, which are unseen creation from the eyes of humans now, were also under the command of Sulaimanalaihi salam. He was the only person to whom Allah had granted the power to control Jinns. He could command them and utilize them for his service. He could even make them suffer for disobedience.
Allahsubhanahu wa ta'ala directed him to teach both men and jinns, to mine the earth and extract its minerals to make tools and weapons. He also favored him with a mine of copper, which was a rare metal in those days.
During that time, horses were the common mode of transportation. They were very essential for defense, to carry soldiers and cart provisions, and weapons of war. The animals were well cared for and well trained. One day, Sulaimanalaihi salam was reviewing a parade of his stable. The fitness, beauty, and posture of the horses fascinated him so much that he kept on stroking and admiring them. This occupied his mind for some time which somehow affected his worship of Allahsubhanahu wa ta'ala. This made him realize that worldly things might affect the remembrance of Allahsubhanahu wa ta'ala and he repented towards Lord after that.
