The Elves Can Party

As luck had it, she didn’t hear all about the ranger scrolls over supper. She wasn’t there.

The dining staff shrugged. Some mission she was on, they said. Would be back by morning, they said. Her Highness the Princess Alyssa would dine alone that evening in her room, they said. Aerona would take sup with the princess, they said.

Jerks.

I mean, I can eat all by myself. I did it often through high school, taking my supper to my room and eating over a book. But I’d grown kinda used to my cousin’s presence, even when we were sitting there without words, and suddenly, for some reason, I missed that.

“Aerona, what do elves do at night?” I asked when the last bite was done. I’d drawn the silent meal out as long as I could, but eventually there was a vegetable of some sort—a pea, I think—that just couldn’t be cut down into two bites any more, and so I had to put the whole thing in my mouth, chew, and swallow it. Yum.

“I don’t understand the question, Princess,” she said, her eyes continuing their constant defensive sweep of the room.

“You know, at night. When they’re bored. When there’s nobody to talk to.”

“You could talk to me, Princess.”

“Not until you stop calling me Princess.”

“Oh. Well, that is a problem, then, Princess.”

“So when there’s no TV, and no radio, and no CDs to play in a CD player that doesn’t exist, what do elf girls do to entertain themselves?”

“I won’t pretend to know of those things you speak, but elf girls do all sorts of things to entertain themselves.”

“Like what? What did you do when you were a little girl alone in your room, Aerona?”

“I usually practiced throwing knives, Princess.”

“Of course you did,” I said. Why wasn’t I surprised? “So riddle me this, Aerona. Is there anyplace close by to listen to singing, or watch dancing?”

“Yes, there is, Princess.”

“Where?”

“I don’t believe, Princess, that I was ordered by His Majesty to contribute to any of your quests to be delinquent.”

“But you won’t stand in the way of my quest to be delinquent, will you?”

“It depends upon the nature of the quest.”

She shouldn’t have said that. I rose from my seat and walked out the door. She followed, of course, but didn’t stop me.

I walked down the stairs into the main foyer of the castle. She continued following, her eyes still darting from side to side, up and around me, alert for any possible threat. She moved so much like a cat that I imagined her with a twitching tail.

“Are you gonna follow me all the way to the singing?” I asked.

“She would unless I asked her to stop,” a familiar voice boomed from the bottom of the stairs, and my father’s figure stepped out into the light.

“Oh, hi, Daddy,” I said, grinning innocently.

“Don’t hi Daddy me. You were about to defy orders to leave the castle grounds at night, when you are at your most vulnerable, were you not?”

“No, I don’t think so.
