The snows of a long and heavy winter had finally departed from Kaylar. A harvest would be late if at all in most of the farms, and the communities knew it. They had depleted their food stores disastrously in the winter, and already murmurs arose, worrying about survival. The elderly and infirm wore resigned looks, knowing they would be the first to die of starvation, if it came to that. In the city of Kaylar itself, the Kaylarian Knights pondered rumors of Stalarn’s flight through the Seven Cities, and his shelter in the domain of Galidan Cer’liadaen. They investigated the disappearance of several of their brethren, and their swords ached for use.

In Mandynth, the snow still remained, but it was steadily melting, giving rise to flooding and avalanches. Food was also in short supply, but they were better accustomed to dealing with the winter. Lord Templar Altazen, however, considered the failure of his people in Lynk, and the escape of the girl named Arana and the power she represented. He pondered the maiming of one of his best servants. He pondered the rectification of honor.

In the Seven Cities, the winter had destroyed many of the villages on which the artisans and scholars depended for food. Galidan Cer’liadaen, Shaldera, and the Lady of Org were meeting to discuss the food shortage. They also discussed the intrusion of several soldiers of Mandynth in Galidan’s home. They discussed the destruction of Nabd and what it might mean, how they might best protect themselves from such a power as had destroyed it.

And all eyes turned south to Dalnar, barely a nation. Winter had only lightly touched the southern lands. Dalnar had food. Dalnar had no army.
