“Afterward, the professor felt very bad that he hadn’t helped the

young man,” said the fourth cat.

“He knew he wouldn’t have treated an animal or a tree or even a

stone the way he had treated the young man,” the fifth cat said.

“And that’s when he promised himself he would never have

another cat,” the seventh cat purred.

“Hmmm,” Ketem said. “So Professor Buber doesn’t want to

have a cat because he’s afraid the cat will distract him when

he’s talking to people who come to ask him for advice?”

The seven cats nodded.
