When selecting MySQL, we can choose first-or second-generation instances. Although we are provisioning the underlying instances, it is a fully managed service that is capable of handling up to 10 TB of storage. Cloud SQL databases are relational, which means that they are organized into tables, rows, and columns. As an alternative, we can also install the SQL Server application image onto a Compute Engine instance, but Cloud SQL offers many benefits that come from being fully managed by Google—for example, scalability, patching, and updates are applied automatically, automated backups are provided, and it offers high availability out of the box.
Exam tip: Cloud SQL can accommodate up to 10 TB of storage. If you need to handle larger amounts of data, then you should look at alternative services, such as Cloud Spanner.
Let's look at some of the features offered by Cloud SQL. We should note that any first generation MySQL instances will be automatically upgraded in 2020. It is best to select second generation whenever you are creating a new MySQL instance.
Cloud SQL for MySQL offers us the following:
The first generation offers support for MySQL 5.5 or 5.6 and can provide up to 16 GB of RAM and 500 GB of storage. The default option is to create a second generation version.
The second generation offers support for MySQL 5.6 or 5.7 and can provide up to 416 GB of RAM and 10 TB of storage.
There's data replication between availability zones.
There's automatic failover.
There's point-in-time recovery.
There's instance cloning.
It offers integration with GCPs monitoring and logging solutions—Stackdriver.
