Chapter Twenty Five

The phone ringing woke Max up after only two hours of sleep. He’d finally gone to sleep imagining every possible scenario for a rescue operation he wasn’t even sure was needed. He needed to get in touch with Escondido and find out if there was a damsel in distress or if he was just letting his obsessive tendencies get the better of him.

Usually, he vented this sort of energy by working a woman over hard until she begged for mercy and he sent her hobbling home. But after talking to Escondido that sort of thing no longer held the same appeal. He’d briefly considered getting a guard to hook him up with a cartel whore so he could blow off a little steam, but then he’d think of the plight of women who’d been abducted just so men could use them and toss them aside. Now, granted, any woman he fucked was there willingly and he always made sure she was damn glad to be there. But still. It was the principle of the thing.

“Yeah,” Max rumbled before clearing his throat and rubbing his sleepy eyes. At the sound of Escondido’s voice, he sat up straight and fully alert.

“I got a location on the Haitians. Figured I better get you some intel before you went off on some one-man mission. You haven’t been working with me long enough yet to get killed.”

“Yeah. I dunno. Maybe I’m worrying about nothing.” His voice sounded a little better after getting a few words out; no longer like a frog croaking. He ran a hand over his stubbled cheek.

“Doesn’t matter. Only one way to find out. If you need to do recon to put your mind at ease, I’m on board. I don’t like the idea of women being abused either. Ricardo has helped us identify a warehouse on River Road.”

Max scratched his head and stifled a yawn. “Sometimes I think every-fucking-thing happens on River Road.”

Escondido chuckled but didn’t respond. He gave Max the details and a caveat. “I don’t have confirmation that women are being held there at the moment, but apparently it’s become Agewe’s usual staging area.”

“Fuck…”

“They use the facility as a holding area where the women are turned out. In other words, they’re persuaded to cooperate, one way or another, and then they’re trained on what will be expected of them when they’re sold. Take Dante and Luciano along. It’s been a while since they did a job and they’re itching for a fight so you’ll be in good hands. I’m serious about you not taking any unnecessary risks, Max. You go in there and if there are women, get them out and then you get the fuck out of there. I don’t want loose ends and I don’t want to have to clean up a mess.”

“Escondido, man, I appreciate this. It may be a false alarm but I couldn’t live with myself if innocent women were killed when we take those fuckers down.”

“Hey, I get it. Wait until the middle of the night when they’re off their game and go for what you know.
