TOPIC 26.9

How to Select the Right Technique

From both my experience and my reading, it has become apparent to me that we have gained nothing if we have learned techniques but not how to recognize the situations that would benefit from applying them, and which ones to apply. In the situation I described at the beginning of this chapter in which I helped to solve a problem that had been nagging a manufacturer for nine months, we discovered that six people in the group had studied the same technique that I used in solving the problem. All of them were manufacturing professionals who had been trying to solve the problem during the entire nine months, but they had not recognized the applicability of the technique in question: root-cause analysis. It is not enough to learn techniques; you must practice spotting opportunities to apply them. In a critical thinking course I teach from time to time, we use the flowchart in figure 26.3 as an aid in diagnosing concerns, with the goal of deciding which interventions would be most appropriate for specific problems.
