CHAPTER 7

Having added a new name to their ever-growing list, Sam updated Momma about their conversation with Rutledge while Tim took care of the traffic. It didn’t begin to slow them down until they reached the outskirts of Portland and by then, Momma had already taken care of their travel arrangements. While they did have a bit of downtime at the airport for their short flight south, a couple of tickets in Business Class proved to be their silver lining.

“At least you’ll get a decent meal during the flight,” Momma said before wishing them good luck and ending the call.

While waiting at the airport, Sam called Miguel to give him a brief update and to find out how he was going. It came as a shock to her when he decided to attend a local college to get his high school diploma. Once he completed that, Miguel continued his newfound direction by turning his attention to college where he worked towards qualifications that would help him get into teaching. His plan was to help underprivileged people in some of the poorest neighborhoods around Kansas City, a plan Sam had fully supported him with…as well as a few of her colleagues and contacts they knew who could help.

“You look good,” Sam told him when the first boarding call for their flight echoed across the terminal. He really did, his complexion was just one of the things that had cleared up once he relaxed into his new role. He smiled a lot more, the serious side taking a backseat for perhaps the first time since they’d crossed the border into the US. Despite the years of mental struggles, it looked as if Miguel was finally finding his place in the world.

“Thank you, Sam,” Miguel said and with a final wave, he ended the call.

Just as Momma had promised, the meal more than made up for having to wait almost three hours for their trip south with Sam enjoying some baked salmon on a buttery bed of potato mash and green beans. The dessert barely lasted more than three or four mouthfuls, the chocolate cake with raspberry coulis too good to savor. When Tim held out his serving, Sam didn’t think twice before grabbing it.

“You’re missing out, you know,” she said with a mouthful of chocolatey goo.

“It’s too sweet and I wanna get a bit of shut-eye.”

“Sleep? We got a whole night to sleep when we land.”

“I know but I’m just exhausted after today.”

She didn’t object, of course, the cake one of the best travel partners she could have asked for. When done, Sam pulled out her phone and connected to the plane’s Wi-fi before scrolling through a few TikTok videos but when nothing held her attention, she shut off her phone and closed her eyes.

The hum of the engines mixed with the plane’s gentle rocking worked together with her full belly to draw Sam down into the depths of sleep. She tried to resist but knew there was little point when she took a final look over at Tim who appeared to be out cold.
