I hope you know how fond I am of you, but today’s events showed me that I have not properly conveyed the nature of my feelings. You seem to have entertained thoughts of an increased intimacy between us, perhaps of our even entering into a domestic life together. But you must put such notions aside, because I am not a fit husband for you or anyone.

As you know, I suffered greatly during my infancy, receiving grievous injuries that have plagued me ever since. I have loved my students, your brother Tommy among them, and often ask, how could any lady whom I might wed understand that they must be my first priority?—and that I would bring her bouquets of weeds, moss, and fungi instead of roses and have to leave home at four a.m. to converse with my “green people.” (Feeble jokes, but true.) In some respects, our Great Creator made me unlike most other men. Occasionally I have taken pleasure in, but at other times feared or despised the baffling feelings that I harbor.
