At eleven the bridge games broke up. Hank sat out on the veranda bannisters and yawned. Ethel got up and came over to him. She was wearing some new perfume. Probably another gift from her mother. It was fine.

“Nice smell,” he said. “You smell fine.”

“It’s new.”

“Yeah.” He yawned. “Gosh, I’m sleepy. Let’s take a run up to bed, huh?”

She looked around to be sure no one had heard him.

“You know I can’t,” she whispered. “You know I promised to stay with mother. That was the first thing she asked me when we were alone after dinner. Was I going to move from her room to stay with you. Poor thing. She’s so lonely. I promised I wouldn’t. I’m sorry, honey. Really, I’m sorry.”

“It’s all right,” he said. He shrugged. “I hoped you might come up for a visit.”

She bit her lip. “I’d like to. But mother likes to go for a drive. What she really likes to do is eat. There’s a little town about twenty miles away. It has a nice restaurant and lounge. We drive over every night. I’ve asked Bart to drive us. We didn’t know you’d be here. But please come along—”

“I’m not hungry. Anyway I don’t want to eat.”

“Don’t be mad.”

“I’m not.”

“After all, I’ve some plans I’ve already made. You can’t expect me to change everything on a moment’s notice!”
