“In here,” Jones said. “There’s plenty of room, and the door works. This should do.”

“Good,” I said, “Let’s clear the building and get started. We need to see if you guys can do this so we can get back on mission.”

The building Jones picked was a single story with a round room and three doors. The main room was fifteen feet across and eight feet tall. The three adjoining rooms were also circular but half the size. There was nothing left to clue us in about the place’s purpose.

Dust formed a thick carpet on the floor that puffed up in plumes with each step. When a cloud of it hit my nose, it sent me into a sneezing fit. It smelled of old forgotten things, which seemed about right.

“Let’s sit on the floor in the same pose as the guy in the drawing,” I said.

I sank to the floor with the team following my lead. “Close your eyes and picture your spirit animal. Then imagine your energy flowing to it and forming a sphere. Keep feeding energy into it.”

“Is it supposed to come back out?” Kopf asked. “The energy, I mean.”

“Yeah, I think that is exactly what should happen,” I said. “Keep it up.”

“How do you know for sure?” Kopf asked without his usual smartass tone.

“That’s how it works for me, and I think it made our bond stronger. Or made us stronger, somehow. Either way, this.” I punched out, calling forth Aspen’s clawed talon.

“That’s sweet,” Jones said. “I wonder what mine will do when I reach that point?”

“Probably a fluffy tail and excessive cuteness,” Standish said.

Jones, Kopf, and I gawked at Standish. His comment was uncharacteristic of the usually stoic man. Kopf was the first to laugh, gaining him a punch in the arm from Jones. Then I laughed at her reaction to the image of a glowing set of bunny ears and fluffy tail on the tough Marine.

“Let’s get back to the meditation,” I said. “We need to be stronger if we’re going to tackle this growing list of tasks we have to accomplish.”

My team settled back into their seated positions with nods and murmurs of agreement. A couple of seconds later, the sea-green sphere of energy was prominent in my mind’s eye.

The familiar burst of a standard-issue rifle report tore through the silence in rapid succession. The sound was followed by a small explosion, then a scream. The sounds that followed were an eruption of movement and time. I jumped up and ran for the door. All weapons came up, ready to send machines to Junkyard Hades.

The sight we found caused us to pause. Where I expected to see Marines fighting machines, I saw a man sitting on a machine. He wore a dark blue uniform that shimmered as he moved, which marked him as a SEAL. The machine between his legs was unlike any we had faced so far. Long thin legs held a barrel-shaped body and gave us a good look at the pistons and actuators providing locomotion.
