Nathaniel Gorham was elected as the seventh President of the United States on June 6, 1786.

He served as President until November 5, 1786.

It is rumored that, while serving as President, Gorham suggested to Alexander Hamilton that Prince Henry of Prussia should succeed him as President, so as to be appointed by Congress as King of the United States. Hamilton supposedly revoked the offer saving the Prince and the Congress the need for reply.

The next year, in 1787, he was one of the Massachusetts Delegates sent to the Constitutional Convention, where he was a chairman of the Committee of the Whole. Even though George Washington was the official leader of the Convention, Gorham’s chairmanship often placed him in charge of convention sessions.

Gorham would not only sign the Constitution in Convention, he would also campaign to make sure that the Constitution was ratified in Massachusetts.

The last public office held by Gorham was as Judge of the Middlesex County Court of Common Pleas.
