Criminals often rely on stealth to gain entry
A security system can be elaborate, automatically calling a monitoring service or the police when it goes off, or it can be a simple noise maker. The primary goal of any security system is to warn the occupants, and hopefully, scare away the intruder. If loud enough, it may also alert neighbors who will call the police or come to check on you.
A family dog can also be an excellent security system. Dogs are difficult to surprise and usually very vocal when they hear something they suspect may be dangerous. Make every effort to teach your dog that part of its role is to help guard your household. Offer praise when it barks to alert you of someone approaching your home. This is not to suggest that a family pet should ever be trained as an attack dog. Guard dogs are trained to stay alert and make noise. Attack dogs are trained to viciously attack. Without extensive professional training, dogs should never be taught to attack anyone. There is too great of a risk that a child or innocent person will be injured or killed.
Motion-detector flood lights can be installed on the exterior of your home to scare away potential intruders as well as prevent people from hiding on your property. Keep bushes and tree limbs trimmed back to eliminate hiding spots and access points to the upper floors of your home. Finally, consider putting gravel outside of lower story windows to act as a noise deterrent and planting thorny bushes, such as Barberry or Hawthorne, in front of the windows.
