The next two charts (figure 5.6 on the facing page and figure 5.7 on page 122) show the first half and second half of the messy U shape that follows a threatening crisis. It drops like a rocket and rose again just as fast. While 80 percent of the components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped on September 17, the vast majority of the declines reversed back to pre-9/11 values within just nineteen days. From September 20 to the end of the year, the major indices rose approximately 20 percent.
