Currently, there has been limited research on minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for 6MWT in cancer population. A MCID of 17.8 m has been established in moderately frail older Asian adults [21] while a MCID between 22 and 32 m has been established for lung cancer patients [22].

8.3.3.2 Ten Metre Gait Speed (10MGS)

Gait speed is contingent on the smooth integration of multiple organ systems including the musculoskeletal system, cardiopulmonary system and nervous system. Besides being used in the detection of frailty, it is also a strong predictor of future disability, cognitive decline, falls, hospitalisation, institutionalisation and mortality [23].

In 10MGS, gait speed will be assessed using a straight unobstructed course. The test can commence from both static start and rolling start. For a static start, the patient stands at the start of the marked 10 m course. Timing commences from the moment the patient starts walking along the marked 10 m path, and ends when it crosses the 10 m mark. For rolling start, a minimum 1 m acceleration and deceleration zones is recommended [24]. To allow for acceleration and deceleration, the walk will be performed with a 1 metre rolling start, where the patient is already walking when they enter the measuring area. Timing will be started when the toes of the leading foot cross the 1 metre mark and it will be stopped when the toes of the leading foot cross the 11-metre mark. The 10MGS protocol is summarised in Fig. 8.2.
