Three classes of medications that are commonly used for diabetes can cause hypoglycemia: insulin itself and the sulfonylurea drugs and meglitinides that act by getting the pancreas to release more insulin (see Chapter 18). Among the sulfonylurea drugs and meglitinides are the following:
✓
Glyburide, with brand names like Micronase, Diabeta, and Glynase
✓
Glipizide, with brands names like Glucotrol and Glucotrol XL
✓
Glimeperide, with the brand name Amaryl
✓
Repaglinide, with the brand name Prandin
✓
Nateglinide, with the brand name Starlix
Looking out for symptoms
The reason you develop symptoms is that both your brain and your muscles require glucose to function properly. Your muscles can turn to fat for energy when your blood glucose is low, but your brain requires glucose.
The level of blood glucose at which you develop hypoglycemic symptoms may be different for different people and even for the same person at different times.
Most experts agree that a blood glucose of 60 mg/dl or less brings on signs and symptoms.
Symptoms fall into two major categories:
✓
Adrenergic symptoms refer to the symptoms that occur when your blood glucose falls rapidly. They are called adrenergic because in this

situation, your body releases adrenaline to raise your blood glucose, and that action brings on many of the symptoms. The symptoms include:
•
Anxiety
•
Irritability
