Chapter Nine

Riker woke up with a smile on his face. From the moment he rolled out of bed, until he took a shower, and right up until the time he made his way downstairs, he whistled a song which managed to stick its way in his head.

He had been flying high ever since his afternoon delight that he had shared with Slade in the forest yesterday. Before they begrudgingly said their good-byes for the night, they had lain with one another, naked and free in the forest. Underneath the tree they leaned against the trunk in one another’s arms for what seemed like hours.

They’d talked and shared stories with one another, learning as much as they could about each other. There was no limit to what they discussed. All that mattered was that they were together.

Riker had never felt so alive just by being in someone’s company before. He was experiencing emotions that he didn’t quite understand, ones that he always assumed were nothing more than a myth. Regardless of them being foreign to him, he loved every bit of it.

By the time he’d gotten back to the barn, the sun had already set and the moon hung high up in the sky. He’d fed and watered his horse before walking him back to his stall and heading back to the house.

As he walked over the hill and through the meadow which spread the distance between the barn and the Tulsen family home, Riker wondered if this was how Declan felt about Alec. It wasn’t until that moment that he even remembered that Alec was Slade’s brother.

He laughed at the knowledge, thinking how ironic it was that he and Declan would both fall for brothers of the same family, when he and his brother were polar opposites. Declan was always more sensitive and compassionate, whereas everyone looked at Riker as being the grumpiest of the Tulsen men.

It was a reputation that never really bothered him. He was a sour character more often than not. Maybe that was because he hadn’t had Slade in his life before. Maybe, he wondered, Slade was what he needed this whole time. He sure as hell needed him now. Heck, he wanted him now.

It had taken just about every amount of restraint he had to not run to the other side of Zarantaria to Slade’s workshop. He had nearly given into his urge at least three times on his walk back to the house. Then a few more times as he lay awake in bed thinking of how good they had been together. Their lovemaking had been phenomenal, much better than he’d ever had in his entire life. Still, he relented. He knew Slade had a load of customer orders to fill, and he knew damn well that if he showed up at Slade’s shop the only thing getting hot and worked over would be the two of them.

Riker made his way to the kitchen for breakfast. He was still whistling whatever song it was that was stuck in his head.
