The only real question after I finished my explanation came from Donald, and he wanted to know what I meant about recoveries. I explained to him that, from time to time, for quick cash, I would locate a stolen item, recover it, and bring it to the insurance company. They would pay a hefty fee for its return, no questions asked, so that they weren’t liable for the full pay out on the item. Sort of like the bounty on a criminal, payment for the trouble to find and bring them in.

I had done a few of those long ago, but trouble always followed those cases, since it was law enforcement and hours of answering questions came in order to get the money. No, I much preferred to pop into a thief’s house and steal back what they’d taken.

Now, a few times, the person who had stolen an item had actually recovered it for the true owner. Like items looted during wars and taken from families. Those I never got involved with. A few times, I lifted a stolen item and neither party truly owned it, according to claims filed and what I found in their heads. I might have returned it to the rightful owners on those cases, but I never added those to my resume.

Donald turned out to be quite the computer whiz and when I showed him the site that listed items for recovery, he said he’d work on getting me a list and the backgrounds of them. I, in turn, agreed to split the finder’s fee with him if he handled the legwork and put it towards the debt. I had worried that would sound condescending, but he simply smiled and snatched the laptop away from me.

It warmed my heart to know that they weren’t lazy but simply had needed a light to show them the way out of their misfortunes.

Dillon and Desmond returned home to speak with their wives, and hopefully start packing, deciding what they might offer to the cousins as available to sell.

I visited Ashley the moment I received word he was awake. Talk about a delay in the main issue. It made me think of those stupid shows that spent an entire season working towards finding out who committed whatever crime. Too much never-ending loops and obstacles… Where I was more blunt, get right to it, blow up whatever was in the way.

“So I took a really long nap, huh?” Ashley chuckled nervously after I filled him in on the situation. “Is Shonassir okay? Did someone at least warn him?”

“Yes, he’s in lockdown at the hive until we found out more and vetted you.” He slowly nodded as he stuffed his starving pie hole. “Now, you’re this leader’s cousin and you’re unhappy with your station. So tell us now why we should trust you. What do you know?”

“Not much, only that Shonassir is on top of a short list for an elder position as one of the rotations is coming up? I’m
