When a Therapist is Needed

With all of this advice and all of these possibilities, you might still encounter unwanted thoughts. You might encounter thoughts that upset you and worry you. You may still encounter thoughts that make you stay up at night -- even if you meditate and detach from the stories in your mind.

When you begin to notice all of these practices are not changing the way you feel, or you notice that you have thoughts that don’t seem to make sense, it might be wise to work with a professional to help you calm things down. Most of the time, your mind just needs a little more attention to settle down, but if you’ve tried these ideas, it might be time for someone else to step in to support you.

The mind is a precious part of you. It can help you become more aware and more empowered in your own life. It can help you feel more alive and interact in more positive ways. Your mind can also have slight imbalances that meditation might be able to help, but not stop. If you have had mental health support in the past, it might be wise to return to this support system again if you find your mind unable (or unwilling) to settle down.

Other signs you need a therapist:

•Others in your life suggest it - Though you might not want this advice from people you love, they often give this advice when we most need to hear it. They are able to look at what is happening to you from the outside and are often more objective than we can be.

•You can’t settle your brain - If you have tried meditation, writing, and exercising for at least a week or two, and the thoughts keep coming back, you may want to find a therapist.

•You can’t settle down, period - When you notice you have really intense periods of energy and enthusiasm that feel uncontrollable, this can be a sign you need more mental health help.

•You can’t cheer up - Conversely, if you notice your thoughts are dark and veering into suicidal, you need to find a therapist. Your mind can begin to tell you things that aren’t true when you’re feeling low. And when you feel low, you might feel as though things will never get better. They will. You just might need someone else to help you get out of this feeling.
