Brawley the Bender came out of the head and paused to watch the TV behind the counter.

Two men and two women, all dressed in big city business suits, sat around a table discussing the Latticework.

Only it wasn’t really a discussion, of course, but carefully calculated Order propaganda.

“The big surprise here,” one of the women said, “the thing that none of us really anticipated, was just how effective the Super Lattice would be at keeping us safe.”

The talking heads nodded in unison.

“It’s crucial,” one of the men blurted.

The other man jumped in. “You’re absolutely right, Carole. It’s nothing short of astonishing. Since the inception of the Super Lattice, we haven’t had a single attack from the power mage or the Tiger Mage.”

“Certainly you’re not suggesting that we can relax now?” the dark-haired woman chimed in, offering token resistance that was actually just a soft lob.

“Not at all,” the man said, “if anything, we have to be more vigilant than ever. The power mage and Tiger Mage likely understand what we’re all realizing now. The Super Lattice is ushering in a new age of enhanced safety. By connecting so many new consciousnesses, the Order can forecast and react to threats faster than ever before. Which is stellar news for the community.”

“Unless you’re a criminal,” the light-haired woman qualified with a smile.

“Precisely,” the man continued. “And that’s why we must remain hypervigilant. We have these terrorists on the run. But desperate men are dangerous men.”

The talking heads ran a press conference clip of Janusian saying basically the same things. Brawley stared at the man, imagining the old face covered in white fur slashed with black stripes.

“That son of a bitch needs to die,” Brawley said, sliding into the booth beside his lovely Bender wife. “Pronto.”

Tammy nodded, looking uncomfortable, and glanced over to where the kids were having fun trying to scoop up something from the heap of junky toys at the bottom of the claw machine.

Brawley pulled Tammy up close beside him.

Janusian recited a list of arrests, foiled plots, and promising leads that had resulted from the Super Lattice and urged anyone who hadn’t plugged in yet to do so immediately.

Janusian opened the floor to questions.

A reporter said, “Arch Mage, we’re hearing rumors that plugging into the Super Lattice will soon become mandatory. Is there any truth to these rumors, sir, and if so, what can we expect?”

“Well, I don’t want to speak to that possibility yet,” Janusian said, “but given the incredible advantages to a fully connected society, we are, yes, considering all avenues to promote increased participation. Frankly, we are already impressed by voluntary participation.” He showed the press puppets his pearly whites. “At this rate, every last psi mage will voluntarily plug in by the weekend. Well, everyone except for criminals, that is.”

“Right,” Tammy said, “the old anti-privacy line. If we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear.” She’d barely finished her sentence before she switched gears and called to Hannah, telling the tow-headed toddler not to kick the machine.
