Part Two

Potty Training In a While

Chapter 36: Introduction

The need to use a toilet when it is time to urinate or defecate is not an instinct with which we are born. As a species made for survival, our primary actions focus on foraging for food when hungry, eating for nourishment, and throwing waste out as we ready our bodies for another meal. The desire to use a private space to relieve ourselves, without soiling oneself or the surroundings, however, is an evolved thought process, born from the need to stay clean and out of consideration for the health and safety of other society member

Evolved patterns of thinking, such as embarrassment at messing in one’s clothes, or retreating to a quiet space to relieve ourselves are usually not part of your child’s early development. As a parent, you are expected to teach your child the concept of using the toilet to some extent by the time they are toddlers. This need for potty training, however, has not always been so urgent. Before the advent of the disposable diaper, many parents were content to let their toddlers roam around without protective covering until they mastered control of their bowels and bladders. The arrival of disposable nappies served as an even more convenient solution that allowed parents to delay potty training for as long as needed.

In today's world, however, potty training is viewed with differing views. There is a group with the opinion that potty training your child helps prepare him or her for the early challenges in life. There is another group that argues that potty training your child may lead to such issues as power struggles, defiant behavior, and filial pressure. No matter what side of the debate your argument supports, it cannot be disputed that a basic knowledge of the potty and its uses helps usher your child into the big-kid world.

The Benefits of Potty Training your child

Potty training is a not a simple, 1-2-3 stepped procedure; it is one that needs time, patience, and readiness, both on your child’s part and yours. It also requires you to be prepared to guide your child through such discoveries as hygiene, responsibility, and ownership. Taking weeks, even months of dedication to accomplish, an increasing number of parents choose to delay potty training until their child is ready to begin pre-school. Some parents, on the other hand, choose to skip the potty-training process altogether, and rely on the child’s own abilities to tell when he or she is ready to get out of diapers.

In theory, there is no right or wrong choice when it comes to potty training your child. There is no guarantee that a potty-trained child will develop into a better-rounded person than an untrained counterpart. Successful potty training does not automatically indicate a child has higher intellect or ability. What early potty training can do for your child, however, is provide him or her a number of benefits that help boost personal growth and development. Here are just some of the
