Day three

BY THE THIRD day a definite pattern should have emerged as to how often he needs to use the potty. The progress chart should be of help when planning the best time for your first outing. Ideally it should be a short visit to one of his friends who lives close by. Before leaving the house your toddler should be encouraged to use the potty so as to avoid any accidents on the journey. Do not be tempted to put him back into a nappy or disposable pull-up trainer pants on outings, as this will only give confusing signals and is one of the main reasons why potty training can take so long.

Consistency is of the utmost importance if you want to potty train quickly and successfully. Dress your toddler in pants at all times during the day – nappies are for sleep times only. While there may be a few accidents during the first few days, these mishaps will actually help your child to become more aware of his need to pee, and the difference between wet and dry. It is best not to make a fuss or scold your toddler if he has an accident, simply remind him what the potty is for.

In the early days it is advisable to take a couple of spare changes of clothes and pants on outings and a plastic bag to put them in if they get wet. And always remember his special cushion (see here) when travelling in the car or using the buggy. Until your toddler gets used to using the loo you will also need to take his potty. Although I have never personally used one, there are special portable potties now available for travelling.

Guidelines that will help during Day three:

The important thing when going on an outing is not to be tempted to put him back into nappies or trainer pants. This will only confuse your child and in my experience flitting back and forth from pants to nappies is one of the main reasons why potty training can take so long for many parents.

Accept that there may be an accident when you are out and go well equipped with two sets of changes of outer clothes and pants, a plastic bag to put any wet clothes in as well as his special cushion.

Before you leave the house take your child and his potty with you to the bathroom, explain that ‘Mummy is going to sit on the loo and do a pee, and that he should sit on his potty as well’, encourage him to sit for five to ten minutes by reading him a story. Some parents maintain that running the cold tap while sitting the child on the potty often encourages them to do a pee. It will do no harm to try this if nothing has happened within five minutes. Once ten minutes have elapsed I would not insist that he sits any longer. I would prepare for the outing, which should ideally only be a ten-minute journey away, and trust to luck that you get there without any accidents.
