John Taylor’s Thermometer

IN HIS BOOK Person to Person, John Taylor (1984) describes a role-play activity that helps adults understand a child’s perceptions and experience the difference between closeness and trust and distance and hostility.

One adult volunteer plays a child and another is the adult. The two start out facing each other about four feet apart. The “child” is told: “Whenever the ‘adult’ says something that makes you feel encouraged, move toward him. Whenever the ‘adult’ says something that makes you feel discouraged, move further away. Do not respond verbally.” The “adult” is then instructed, “Start out by making punitive statements intended to make the ‘child’ feel guilty or bad. Then change your tactics and make positive statements to help the ‘child’ feel understood and encouraged.”

Here is one example of what happened when two people tried this activity:

Adult: I heard you were misbehaving on the playground again! When are you going to learn to be more respectful? (Child moves away.)
