Measures of meaning in life

Over the years several scales have been developed and tested to measure meaning in life. The Meaning in Life Questionnaire was developed by Steger, Frazier, Oishi, and Kaler (2006). It contains 10 items and two subscales: presence of life meaning subscale, and a search for meaning.

The Personal Meaning Profile (PMP) (MacDonald et al., 2012) has several versions. The brief version includes 21 items intended to measure people’s perceptions of personal meaning in their lives. The PMP includes seven subscales: achievement, relationship, religion, self-transcendence, self-acceptance, intimacy and fair treatment.

The Purpose in Life Test (Crumbaugh & Maholick, 1964) contains 20 items which assess the degree to which an individual experiences a sense of meaning or purpose in life.
