Porsche 917LH and 917/20 at Arnage curve during April tests in Le Mans (1971).
Porsche 917 K no.22 of Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep after the start of 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans in front of a Ferrari 512 S and Porsche 917/20 no.23 of Willi Kauhsen and Reinhold Jöst.
Porsche 917 K no.22 is refuelled during a pit stop near the end of the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans.
We’ve just stopped in the pits, the results are announced and the spectators applaud, thrilled and astonished at such a feat. Without a doubt, these tests at the de la Sarthe circuit have been gratifying for everyone and are a large incentive for Porsche’s competition department, whose expectations to achieve a second victory in the race have been reinforced.
On the race of 12 and 13 June, Porsche confirmed the advantage attributed to it after the tests in April, dominating the race completely and maintaining the lead throughout almost all the race, except for a period of less than 1 hour during the night. Victory ended up going to a 917 K enrolled by Martini Racing and driven by Helmut Marko and Gijs Van Lennep, who, while not being the fastest, had a very regular race without any major problems. They stopped a planned twenty-eight times, totalling 51 minutes in the pits for refuelling and changing tyres, with only two unexpected stops to replace the alternator belt and to fasten the cooling fan of the engine. Even so, they beat the record of distance driven, which had been in place since 1967 (in a Ford MK IV driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt), by driving 3,315.7 miles (5,335km) in the 24 hours at an average of 138.1mph (222.3km/h).32
