LULZSEC CLAIMED TO HAVE STOLEN MORE THAN A MILLION USER PASSWORDS, NAMES, ADDRESSES, E-MAIL ADDRESSES, AND POSTED SAMPLES ONLINE AS PROOF.

But LulzSec was not a coherent, populist guerrilla movement. For every group of users it claimed to protect, it offered a different data dump of exposed accounts. A few thousand pieces of personally identifiable information (PII) here, another 62,000 users there, culminating in that final cache of 750,000 accounts.

And in so doing, LulzSec, and groups and individuals like them, feed a far more vicious class of predator. The ecosystem of persistent digital assault, always prodding users for vulnerabilities and financial institutions for security exploits, feeds on this steady supply of privacy violations. Compromised accounts drift like kelp in open waters. PII betrays its subjects, and leads to more PII, which is compiled into databases. All of the principles we’ve covered so far—the growing amount of data, the greater ease with which it can be collected, how it’s filtered and organized, resold, reused, becoming a new form of transferable currency—are at play here. The only difference is the raw illegality of attacks on financial privacy. None of the aggressors claim to be honest brokers.
