6.1 Characteristics of Polarimetric Reflectance of the Vegetation Canopy

Vegetation is the most typical of ground objects. This section focuses on the characteristics of polarization reflectance of the vegetation canopy to demonstrate the properties of radiative transfer.

When observation is conducted by human eye or sensor at an oblique angle, it can be found that part of the leaf surface appears white rather than green (Fig. 6.1). A majority of the photons are specularly reflected directly from the surface and due to the high intensity of such radiation, it tends to be cause dazzling. In addition, the part with a white colour illustrates the absence of wavelength selectivity, meaning that the reflectivity in the visible range is uniform. Based on the Fresnel principle, this part of the light is partly polarized (Vanderbilt et al. 1985).
