“Swelling’s way down,” Dr. Evanston answered. “What’s the rush? Can’t wait to have me slice and dice?”

Aleni shuddered. Evanston thought he was the next Mr. Comedy. Young and good-looking, to be sure, but now wasn’t the time to make funny. “I need to get home to my son. Are we on for tomorrow?”

He tugged at his chin. “Last time you had any blood thinners?”

“Not even an aspirin for at least a month. Although, last weekend’s patients caused a headache or two.” Aleni smiled, knowing he’d understand. They always got a bunch of oddball situations this close to Christmas.

He flipped a page on the chart. “Then, we…are…on.” With a swipe of his hand, he pulled the chair closer to her bed. “Want me to go over the particulars, Nurse Callan?”

She raised her eyebrows, playing around. “You think I don’t know discharge instructions?”

“You might not know mine. How long ago was your ortho rotation?”

“Point well taken. OK, give me instructions.”

“No weight-bearing for a least two weeks, probably much longer, but we’ll make that decision at the two-week point. And that means absolutely no weight on the foot. Not, almost no weight. No weight.” He looked up from the chart. “Don’t give me that face. You’ll need to have help with your son, especially with Christmas around the corner.”

“Live in help? I’m sure my mother-in-law would stay with me.”

“That’s great. Now we’re talkin’. Your home is one, two stories?”

Aleni dipped her chin. “Two.”

His brows knit together. “How many steps going into the house.”

“Four.”

“Bedrooms? First or second floor?”

“Second floor. Why?”

“Aleni, you aren’t going to be able to maneuver stairs for a while. You have two options. One, get a hospital bed for your living room.”

She let out a sigh bigger than expected. “Wait. Bathroom’s second floor, also. I have an older house. I suppose we’ll have to jump directly to option two.”

“Stay at your mother-in-law’s.”

“I’m not about to have a hospital bed put in her living room. Besides, there is no downstairs.”

Evanston tapped his pen on her bedrail. “I take it she’s got a two-story as well.”

“Worse. A second-level condo. What am I supposed to do? Go in a rehab center?”

He reached for her hand and squeezed her fingers. “Aleni, let’s not panic. I’m sure we can find a place where you can stay on the first floor. It’ll only be for a couple weeks.”

“Then she and Ty can stay at my home.” A low, rumbling voice interrupted their conversation. Both Aleni and Dr. Evanston stared at the doorway.

“I owe her.” Brice Taylor leaned against the frame with his arms crossed, shadowing the room.

Christie was right. That guy’s hot.

Brice uncrossed his arms and stepped in. “This will make us even.”

And then again, controlling. “Oh, no. Not on your life.” Aleni sat straighter in the bed, but the movement shot darts of pain through her leg.

“Plus,” Brice said. “Only two steps to go into the house.”

Evanston, the traitor, turned Taylor’s direction. “That sounds like a great idea. Solves all the problems.”

“No, no,” Aleni held her hand out.
