Chapter Eighteen

It was late in the evening, and I relaxed in my room when my phone dinged with a notification.

A mass email came on the heels of the text stating the same information.

Emergency meeting in the auditorium.

My eyebrows furrowed, and I pushed off my bed.

What was going on?

I quickly dressed in my loungewear. As soon as I opened my door, I found the halls packed with students exiting their rooms. Following the crowd, I walked out of the building in time to see Wendy and Thomas. I jogged to catch up with them.

“Do you guys know what’s happening?”

Wendy tossed her arm over my shoulder while Thomas did the same on my other side.

“Nope,” they answered at the same time. Maybe their problem was that they were way too similar. That made them perfect friends, but a relationship seemed out of the question, with Thomas not seeming even remotely interested.

Hundreds of students flooded through the courtyard. I hadn’t seen it this packed since the day of orientation. We were jostled from the side.

“Watch it,” Wendy complained.

“You watch it,” the girl that bumped into Wendy said.

“Oh, hells no, you didn’t snap at her like that.”

I unhooked my arms from Wendy and Thomas so I could step up to the tall bitch.

Her lip curled and she growled.

“Back off, mouthy dog.” Her nose flared, and she took a step toward me. She really didn’t like that. People parted around us as I stared the girl down.

Beckett stopped behind her, and a strange rumble came from his throat. The girl lowered her head and shuffled away.

“I don’t need your help.” I re-hooked my arms on my friends. He shook his head and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“Are you sure he doesn’t like you, Maya?” Wendy asked, peeking back.

I scoffed.

“You’re joking, right?” I forgot they didn’t know the extent of the pain he’d put me through. “Trust me. No, he does not.”

“If you say so,” Wendy’s eyebrows furrowed, lips twisting pensively.

“The way he looked at you was intense,” Thomas chimed in. I glared from the corner of my eyes.

They were really reaching at this point.

The administration building loomed, and we stuttered to a stop as the large crowd filed through the doors. This was going to take a while.

Thomas and Wendy chatted as I withdrew into myself. I couldn’t let go of Andrea disappearing like that. Where had she even gone? Theory upon theory flittered through my head. I unhooked myself from Wendy and Thomas as we entered the building.

The line incrementally moved until we reached the chair-lined auditorium. Catching sight of Louis, I grinned when he waved us over.

I brushed past some people already sitting and plopped on one of the free chairs next to him.

Louis was antsy today. He readjusted his position for the third time, then shot me a look from the corner of his eye. I turned to face him, lowering my voice.

“What is it?”

“Uh, yeah, um.” He rubbed his neck. Damn, the boy had grown even more in this last month.
