Chapter 6
âSlow down. If they had wanted to arrest him. They would have done so,â Jan reassured him. âBack up a moment. Your dad owns a company?â
âNo,â Brad explained. âI mean where he works. Dad is one of the bosses at the company.â
âBut that doesnât make sense. You live in California. That man, Ellersby, lived in Missouri.â
âDadâs company, you know what I mean, has branches all over. Dad does some traveling to them sometimes.â
âHas he ever been to Missouri?â
âI donât think so. New York, quite a bit, and Detroit.â
âThen how would he know Mr. Ellersby?â
âDad said that the sheriff knows about a message that went out about the stealing. It had his picture and all. Dad was upset because he tried to explain that he never looks at work on vacation.â Brad looked at Jan. âThatâs true. I remember a big argument a few years ago because Dad answered his phone when we were at this theme park. Mom threatened to throw his phone away. So he agreed to leave work behind while weâre on vacation.â
âIâm sure the police will figure that out. They just have a way of making everyone feel guilty. Like the time I got pulled over by the cops and I started worrying about what laws Iâd broken. But I had been going the speed limit, or near it.â
âSo why did he pull you over?â
âJust wanted to tell me that I had a broken brake light. I donât think they can help it. Itâs the uniform and all. Your dad will be fine. Donât let it spoil your day.â
âBut what money are they talking about? Was he a thief?â
âKind of. The police are handling it. Iâm sure your dad will be okay.â
At that moment Scott called from the door. âBrad! We need to get going. Grab your backpack and hat.â
âComing, Dad.â He hopped up. âThanks.â And he ran off.
Jan thought about what she had learned. Ellersby and his partner must have fled with the money over a week ago. If he ditched his car somewhere and got a rental, then he drove across the country. Even considering that he only drove from Missouri, he would have been on the road for a couple of days. The drive was nearly twenty-four hours long. And he arrived here on Sunday afternoon. Scott didnât get here until that evening and he had flown. Supposedly, he had still been in his office on Friday, after the embezzlement had been discovered. Had he seen the picture? Had he recognized the fugitive? Then why hadnât he called the police?
This time it was Judy who called from the door. âCould we go just a few minutes earlier, Jan? I need to get some money before the tour.â
âSure,â Jan replied, getting up. âIâll be ready in a minute.â She went to her room to change into history tour clothes, comfortable slacks and a light blouse. The other women were ready when she got to the breakfast room.
Jan found the historical tour quite interesting. The town was on what had originally been Wabanaki land.
