I wasted no time calling Chief James once I managed to find a quiet spot on the sidewalk. That was more of a challenge than you’d think, as it was nearing lunchtime, and the downtown area was jammed with tourists, all trying to figure out where to eat. My stomach was starting to rumble too, and I thought lunch was part of the conference fee, but I didn’t have time to eat now. I had a mystery to solve.

“Vincent?”

“Sunshine, what’s going on?” His voice was filled with concern, like he was afraid I was in danger.

“Have you found Ryan Williams yet? I just spoke with Mallory Sinclair, and first of all, she claimed that Sadie was ‘missing,’ not dead. Didn’t you say you spoke with them?”

“Yes,” Chief James said. “The SingleMingle organization is definitely aware of what happened. I spoke with their publicist yesterday.”

“Well, that’s super fishy, though maybe the publicist isn’t here and hasn’t been able to update the Sinclairs yet? I know they’ve been crazy busy with the convention,” I theorized.

“That’s possible. What else?”

“She said Sadie broke up with her boyfriend before leaving for the convention, but he followed her to Bryce Beach.”

“And that’s true,” Chief James confirmed.

“Right… But here’s the thing…” I stalled when I realized I’d have to figure out how to make Vincent aware the SingleMingle organization might be a front for an escort service.

“Let’s not prolong this,” he said curtly. He didn’t like to have his time wasted—and I couldn’t blame him there. It’s just that some things have a more delicate nature.

I decided to blurt it out—the whole Band-Aid method, like I’d advised Evangeline to use, “So, this ambassador program is sounding an awful lot like an escort service.”

My accusation was met with crickets chirping.

“Chief James, did you hear me?”

“What makes you think that, Sunshine?” He sounded like he was dangling by a single thread of his last bit of patience, and it was about to snap.

I didn’t know why he was being so short with me. Maybe he was in the middle of something important—but what was more important than solving a crime? And I was getting closer and closer to the determination that there had indeed been a crime committed. Someone knew why Sadie Lancaster was dead—or they killed her themselves—and I intended to find out who it was and what they knew.

“I went to the prospective ambassador interest meeting, and they talked about how it was intended to match ambassadors with ‘busy professionals’ who didn’t have time to date, and it used algorithms to make matches. But ambassadors are rewarded for going on multiple dates—not for settling down with one person. And all the recruits were female. Oh, and the reward is money. The more dates you go on, the more money you make.”

“That does seem a little suspect,” Chief James said. “But it could be legitimate. I mean, how do you know they’re really selling sex and not just the matching service?”

“I think there’s a back-end to the website where this database of ambassadors resides.
