Morgan tried not to mention Angela first on the car journey back; instead she waited for Cain and after around three minutes, he said, ‘She is amazing.’

A huge grin spread across Morgan’s face. ‘She is and I’ll tell you something, she would be great fun to take out on a date. You know what they say about older women.’ She winked at him.

‘I mean, she’s very attractive and I can’t believe she asked me over tomorrow. Should I go, do you think?’

‘You most definitely should, unless your diary is filled up with dates for different women.’

It was his turn to laugh. ‘It’s not, I haven’t had a date since I broke up with Isabelle, and to be honest, I only had a handful of them anyway because she lived too far away.’

‘Then you should go. Take her some nice flowers, a bottle of decent wine and enjoy yourself. I think you two would get on really well, and she’s so lovely.’

He smiled all the way to The Coffee Pot, where he parked outside. ‘You said lunch was on you.’

‘I said I’d bring it back; I didn’t say I would pay for it.’

‘Same thing: don’t make promises you can’t keep, Brookes. Use Ben’s credit card; he can pay.’

‘I can’t and won’t do that, and besides, I don’t have his cards. I have my own. I’m not a kept woman. I’m an independent woman. Have you no shame?’

‘Not when it comes down to the very serious issue of food: I have no morals whatsoever. I want a tuna savoury baguette, no salad, cheese and onion crisps, peppermint traybake and a latte.’

‘Not much then.’

He waved her out of the car. ‘I’m starving, get a move on.’

She tutted and left him waiting there to go and order the mountain of food to feed all four of them, and wondered, briefly, if she should get Marc something then decided against it. He’d probably eaten while he’d gone home to get changed.
